MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to provide our community with a professional, progressive,
community-oriented police department. We strive to serve our citizens with the
utmost courtesy and concern for their needs with an emphasis on integrity and
fairness. We conduct ourselves in such a manner as to instill confidence and
pride in the Benton Police Department by the community. We strive to protect the
constitutional rights of everyone. Our purpose is to create an atmosphere of
safety and security in our community.
AS A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; to
safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the
weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or
disorder, and to respect the constitutional rights of all men to liberty,
equality and justice.
I WILL keep my private life unsullied as an example to all; maintain courageous
calm in the face of danger, scorn or ridicule; develop self-restraint; and be
constantly mindful of the welfare of others. Honest in thought and deed in both
my personal and official life. I will be exemplary in obeying the laws of the
land and the regulations of my department. Whatever I see or hear of a
confidential nature or that is confided to me in my official capacity will be
kept ever secret unless revelation is necessary in the performance of my duty.
I WILL never act officiously or permit personal feeling, prejudices, animosities
or friendships to influence my decisions. With no compromise for crime and with
relentless prosecution of criminals, I will enforce the law courteously and
appropriately without fear of favor, malice or ill will, never employing
unnecessary force or violence and never accepting gratuities.
I RECOGNIZE the badge of my office as a symbol of public faith, and I accept it
as a public trust to be held so long as I am true to the ethics of the police
service. I will constantly strive to achieve these objectives and ideals,
dedicating myself before God to my chosen profession....Law Enforcement.

PROGRAMS
Among the
many programs presented by McGruff are "Stranger
Safety", "Just Say No", "Fire Arms Safety", and general safety to students
attending local schools and daycare centers. McGruff makes appearances at Anti-
Tobacco meetings, Jr. Golf Tournaments. and he participates in several parades
conducted throughout the city during various times of the year.
Go
on an adventure with Vince & Larry, the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration's crash-test dummies and your guides to
this fun and informative lesson about car, bicycle, school bus, and pedestrian
safety.
The
"Fatal Vision" goggles allow young people to
experience the potentially fatal consequences of alcohol impairment without
taking a drink of alcohol. Wearing the goggles, participants experience the
visual effects, as well as the lack of coordination, judgment and driving skills
that result from alcohol consumption.
The
primary purpose of the "Shop With A Cop" program is
to provide disadvantaged children with $100.00 worth of Christmas gifts and to
have them interact with law enforcement officers in a positive setting.
Officers throughout the year during their daily contacts inform needy families
of the "Shop With A Cop" program. One week before Christmas Officers, Children
and Parents meet at a local department store for Christmas shopping.
Job
shadowing is an academically motivating activity designed to give kids an
up-close look at the world of Law enforcement and to answer their questions
pertaining to Law enforcement. Shadow day is usually done on groundhog day in
February.
Provides
the public with information on state laws regarding Child
safety seats and instructs the public, with hands on training on how to
properly install the car seat.
The Benton Fraternal Order
of Police, with special help from the Benton Kiwanis club and the Saline County
Boys and Girls club organize a Toys for Tots
program where officers and the community come together to raise money and
collect toys for under privileged kids.
The
Citizen Police Academy provides community members
with an inside look at local law enforcement. While at the Academy, students
will be introduced to a variety of topics. Academy classes are taught by police
executives and veteran police officers. Participants will have the opportunity
to meet with the Chief of Police and staff members. They are encouraged to ask
questions and express ideas and concerns to
police employees.
Officers
visit homes or businesses conducting Crime Prevention
checks at the request of the owners. The owners are advised of changes that can
be made to deter crime.
Through
combined efforts, our Neighborhood Watch and patrol
groups are an effective crime prevention force. While vehicle patrols cover
greater distances in less time. Block watchers can identify localized problems
more accurately. We hope some of our ideas will help others realize they don't
have to tolerate crime.
The
program uses an inkless fingerprint pad to obtain a thumb print from customers
wishing to pay by check. Special ink pads capture a clear, readable thumb print.
Thumb Print Signatures on fraudulent documents are
run through law enforcement databases to speed accurate identification,
apprehension and prosecution.
The
Morgan Nick Alert System now gives us the ability
to get information and pictures out across the state, almost instantaneously,
following the initial report of an abduction.
To report a
missing or abducted child call 911 immediately.
